The Bal Harbour community is abuzz with excitement as plans for the transformative redesign of the Bal Harbour Jetty take shape. The Village Council’s careful consideration and selection of Mikyoung Kim Design Studio, an internationally acclaimed landscape architectural firm, mark a significant step towards creating a remarkable family-centered destination.
Mikyoung Kim Design Studio’s Impressive Portfolio:
Mikyoung Kim Design Studio, with a rich history of innovative projects in Boston, Miami, New York, Seoul, and other major cities, is set to weave its magic into the Bal Harbour Jetty. Boasting over 50 design awards, including prestigious accolades from the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and the National Design Medal, the firm brings a wealth of experience in integrating art and landscape ecologies.
Community Engagement and Conceptualization:
The journey toward the Jetty’s transformation began with the first Community Workshop in July 2019, where residents had the opportunity to contribute their thoughts. The 2nd Community Meeting in September 2019 further delved into establishing a unique identity for the Jetty, aligning with the vision of creating a diverse public space that engages with the water’s edge and nature. Mikyoung Kim Design Studio presented concepts that promised a memorable experience for families.
Council Approval and Expansion of Vision:
In a crucial December 2019 Council Meeting, the Basis of Design Report (BODR) for the Jetty and Cutwalk Project received approval. Additionally, the Council greenlit additional services for MYKD to envision the 96th Street Terminus, aligning it seamlessly with the Jetty’s design. This marked a significant expansion of the project’s scope, promising an integrated and harmonious transformation.
Design Development and Environmental Considerations:
The Design Development Phase kick-off meeting in January 2020 signaled the commencement of the project’s next stage. Consultants initiated preliminary meetings with environmental permitting agencies, demonstrating a commitment to navigating the complex regulatory landscape. Currently, consultants are diligently finalizing environmental permits with key agencies, including the Army Corp of Engineers, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and Miami Dade County Department of Environmental Resources Management.
As the project progresses, the community eagerly anticipates the completion of Construction Drawings estimated to begin in 2023. The Bal Harbour Jetty’s transformation, guided by the expertise of Mikyoung Kim Design Studio, promises to be a beacon of art, nature, and community spirit, setting a new standard for placemaking in Bal Harbour.
